Miss Amy Receives Week-long Organ Training at BYU

08 Aug

Miss Amy attended Brigham Young University’s week-long Organ Workshop (August 1-8 2011), and was taught by world-renowned organists from the Tabernacle and Universities around the country.  A birthday gift from her husband, she enjoyed choosing & attending classes that furthered her organ studies.  One evening she was treated to a trip to Temple Square in Salt Lake City to sit 4 feet away from the organ in the Tabernacle and hear a 45-min lecture from 2 of the Tabernacle Organists (Clay Christiansen & Linda Margetts), then hear an hour-long Organ Recital.  Linda Margetts opened the recital with a rousing John Philip-Sousa march, followed by pieces by Bach, Grieg & several other composers.  She was entranced watching hands, feet and the myriad of motions these organists made as they used the 5 expression pedals (controls volume), foot pedals, 5 tiers of keyboards, and numerous sound changes!  It was very inspiring and moving.

As a follow-up to this organ training, Miss Amy will be taking lessons in San Diego from a graduate in Organ Performance to further develop her skills.  Stay tuned in the following years for organ recitals of her own.
